If you need printing, chances are I can get a better deal than you… contact design chef!

1. learn the difference between high resolution and low resolution images. If you download something off the web its low resolution unless you can buy it from a stock photo company. The reason I know this is that all computer monitors only display 72dpi (that’s dots per inch), so all imagery on the web is optimized to display fast and quick on your 72 dpi monitor.

In printing we need to use 300dpi imagery. That’s because we want our graphics and images to be crisp and clear and not pixelated or blurry. You cannot upsize an image. Yes, photoshop does a good job at increasing the resolution of an image, but to the naked eye you will be able to see the difference. Low resolution images will produce an unprofessional result 100% of the time.

2. Always use vector art when possible. photographs are bitmap images, they are also referred to as raster. Fonts are a type of vector artwork, you can scale them any way you please and they will always be crisp and clear. Your logo should always be created in illustrator, not photoshop. Your business card should be in illustrator file as well. If your designer works in Adobe Illustrator you will always get a crisp clear image.

A few years ago someone mentioned the term web 3.0 to me. Honestly, at that time I wasn’t even aware of web 1.0 or 2.0. Since then, I have spent time investigating the potential of web 3.0, and it is quite exciting. I have also come to understand that to see the potential of web 3.0, we need to understand the progression of web technology and the impact it plays in our daily lives. As designers, it is important to understand this history and realize that companies reside on a continuum from living in web 1.0 to growing to web 2.0 and now exploring web 3.0.
The web started as a static environment where users could basically go to and read information on any topic through the use of a web browser. Websites were text pages with little graphics, and the pages were linked together with a common language HTML. This is what is referred to as Web 1.0, the first stage of the worldwide web. According to Wikipedia, this was our web from 1993 to 2001 when the dot com bubble burst.
With the introduction of the first web browser, Mosaic in 1993, companies had a way to be found easily on the web through this directory listing. Other web browsers of the time included Lycos, Netscape and Altavista. Being a college student from 1993-1998, I remember these vividly. I would need switch from one to the other frequently because the all produced different results.
During that time, we also saw the astronomical growth in web-based companies such as Amazon who founded their companies with the “get large or get lost” philosophy spending millions to gather a client base before ever turning a profit.
Since then, the web has been reinvented by companies such as Google and Facebook allowing an average person to generate content on the web through the use of web applications. The human interaction with the web is what Web 2.0 is all about. This interaction and the increasing use of the web’s content on portable devices now require that designers consider the rapid expansion of technology in the sites they build.
This influx of content generated by a global population has made us search for information in a whole new way. Here are some real examples from my own life. In 1998, when I bought my first home I did a lot of research on the web about where to buy a house and who are the best home improvement companies. The information I was reading was provided by experts that owned the web sites. Today my story is quite different — the first thing I do is go to blogs and social media for real-world input about buying a home and home repairs.
Just the other day I was pondering adding a playground in my backyard for the kids. I immediately went to Facebook and made this post:

Those of you with kids and backyard playgrounds…
Are they really worth the money?
Do your kids use them often?

A slew of responses followed in the next two hours giving me the information I needed to make the best decision for my family. Social media and Web 2.0 have revolutionized our searching. We are able to quickly gather the opinions of our friends and the general public instead of only the experts.
So what will be the next evolutionary step for the web? How will our information gathering be any different? The answer is the use of artificial intelligence integrated into our search tools. Web 3.0 will bring browsers that can track your likes, dislikes and common searches you make to learn about you as an individual. All of the information you’ve been adding to the web over the years will now be a useful tool for your browser to determine the information you’ll truly be interested in learning about.
With our browsers now getting smart, our keyword searches can become sentences which can be analyzed so that when the information we need gets returned there will be less junk to sift through, making our searches more efficient. An example of a search query could be this:

I want to go to a hot yoga class then have a turkey burger for lunch…

The browser would use GPS to locate me, and then tell me when the next yoga class is in the area that has a restaurant near by with food I like. In comparison, today I would first need to visit a map site locating all of the yoga studios, then visit all of their sites to find out when the next class is, then cross reference that with a search for a good turkey burger. What a pain, right?
Additionally, there is speculation from Biznetix, a web design firm in Rochester, NY, that a site designed with web 3.0 technology will allow you to download apps to it just like you would with your smart phone. This idea is fascinating to me because it means that there could be ready to use web features available in an app store that will allow designers to easily integrate new technology into their site without the use of a programmer or extensive usability research.
One exciting new feature I’ve seen comming out lately is being able to customize how your web pages look. Google and Yahoo both offer a homepage you can customize to show your interests. Firefox allows a user to install a theme, changing the design entirely. It will be interesting to see the expansion of features such as these with the integration of artificial intelligence.
The web will now doubt continue to play an increasingly important role in everyone’s life making the free sharing of information and also the gathering of information much easier. The key principles of web design — simplicity, clarity and visual interest — will be as important in Web 3.0 as today.

All your optimization decisions should be based on what is best for your users. Search engine optimization is really about making your content visible to search engines and the same principles of accessibility for users works for search engines as well.

The spiders that crawl the Web are looking for essentially the same things you are looking for — CONTENT. The key to great search engine ratings is matching the language on your site site to the language that your users will be searching for. You do this by using key words. Key word rich content is what the spiders use to rank your site when users search, along with links.

The most important keywords are the ones that your users are likely to be using to search for content similar to your own. For instance, if I were looking for a recipe for cream puffs, I might search on the following terms:

cream puffs

recipes

dessert recipes

puff pastry

vanilla cream filling

French desserts

French vanilla

Profiteroles

Profiterol

choux pastry

puff shell

cream filling

creme filling

and on and on…

These words and any combination are all excellent choices. It is your best interest as the content developer for this site to use them liberally both in your text, your image alt tags, your link labels and equally important, use the key words in your file names.

Here are some “best practices” to keep in mind as your go forward:

Give every page in your site a unique (and accurate!) page title.
The page title will likely show up in the search results. For pages deep in your site, you might want to include the business name, but be sure that the title represents the main focus of the page’s content. Be brief, but descriptive.

Make use of the description meta tag.
<meta> — there several kinds of meta tags. Meta tags contain information about the content of an HTML page. For a long time they were considered the magic bullet for great search engine ratings, and were consequently seriously abused. Search engines have improved and meta tags are considerably less important these days than they used to be. Still, they are worth understanding and using.

Meta tags come in two flavors: the “http-equiv” and “name”. The type is specified as an attribute of the meta tag like this:

<meta http-equiv=”content-language” content=”en” />

-OR-

<meta name=”keywords” content=”cream puffs, profiteroles, profiterol, french vanilla cream filling, ream filling, creme filling, desserts, deserts, dessert recipes” />

In both cases the content attribute is used to expand the meaning of the type of meta tag specified.

The “http-equiv” type has many variations. This type of meta tag is used to give the browser more information about the document it is being asked to display. It can include information about how to handle the different mime types, it can be used to automatically re-direct the browser to a new page, refresh (reload) a page at a specified interval, or as shown above, what language to expect the page to be in. The default meta tag that Dreamweaver uses tells the browser to expect an HTML document of a text type using the ISO approved character set. It looks like this:

<meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1″ />

A meta tag that is a “name” type can have five possibilities. They are:

Description contains a simple, keyword-rich description of the page contents.

Keywords contains a list of possible keywords that users might use to search for this page. It could even include common misspellings of those same words.

Author is used to identify the author of the web page, frequently used in conjunction with the copyright meta tag.

Copyright includes the copyright information for the web page.

Robots are used to shield a page from search engines. The content attribute of this type can take two values: “noindex”, to prevent the search engines from indexing this page or “nofollow” to prevent the search engines from following any of the links.

The description meta tag is particularly important because a search engine like Google might use them as snippets in the search results with the relevant words bolded. When writing the description meta tags, accurately describe the page’s content and write a unique description for every page.

4.

Write “Friendly” URLs
Use descriptive words when naming your folders and organizing your site. Obviously, file names are not the place to write long sentences, but within reason, if a user can remember the URL to a page and it makes sense to them, then it will probably be attractive to a search engine as well.

Ideally you want other sites to link to your pages. If your URLs contain keywords then their links will give you and extra little bump. Every time they use a text link to your site, you become just that much more visible through the use of key words in the URL. Avoid lengthy, complicated URLs and generic names.

Keep your site structure as simple (if possible) and logically organized. Again, give the directories names that are relevant. Also, stay away from odd capitalization. Users find them hard to remember.

Consider what might happen if the user removes part of your URL. Users like to navigate in unexpected ways.

Create Easy Navigation
The easier it is for users to find what they are looking for in your site, the easier it is for search engines, too. Organize your pages into a naturally flowing hierarchy. Keep the number of choices on a single page manageable. Describe where the links go. Don’t be afraid to add navigation pages if they clarify the site’s structure. They are much better than going overboard with elaborate navigational bars that try to link every single page in a site to every other. Favor using text links when possible. Use breadcrumb trails to clarify the user’s path through your site.

Include a Sitemap
One of the simplest thing you can do help users (and spiders) to find your pages is to include a site map that lists every page in your site. If you have hundreds of thousands of pages, just include the most important ones. These can be tedious to make and even more tedious to maintain, but there are tools that can help automate the process.

Be sure your site maps are organized by category to reflect the structure of your site. And keep your site map up to date! Link rot is not a pretty thing. Be sure that there is a link to every page in your site somewhere on the site that is in live HTML text. In other words, the links need to be in HTML and not dynamically generated by some fancy AJAX coding which is inaccessible to the spiders.

Focus on Content and Services
If your content is compelling and valuable people will notice. They will link to you from their blogs, send your URL out in email, in forums and more.

Keep your writing easy to read and fresh. Avoid stale language. Break your content up into manageable chunks. Let the user delve in as deep or as shallow as they want. Keep text out of your images.

Use lots of keywords in your text. Keyword rich text is what the search engines are looking for and help the user find what they need. Google provides a useful keyword search tool. You can find it here:

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

As much as possible you want your content to be fresh, unique and exclusive.

5. Use Descriptive, Concise Links

Search engines LOVE links. They especially love links that are labeled for what they link to. It’s even better if the file name is also a key word. In our example above it would be nice if the term “cream puffs” was in the URL. For example:

allrecipes/desserts/creampuffs.html

- OR -

allrecipes/creampuffs/frenchvanilla.html

Format your links so that they look “linky” — make them visible.

Use h Tags
Using h tags helps establish the contents hierarchy. Use them consistently and correctly, but don’t overdo it.

Use keywords in Image’s File Names and Alt Attributes
The content within an image is unreadable by search engines and unavailable to visitors using a screen reader, but the name and alt attribute offer you a way to use them to get a bump in your ratings. Alt attributes become particularly important when you are using the image as a link. Keep your file names and alt attributes short and pithy. It also helps to keep the images in their own folder.

6. Google Analytics

So how do you know what your users are searching for? How do you know if they found what they wanted? In other words, how do you figure out whether you’re reaching your market or not? In a word: Analytics. You need to be able to capture information about what your users are doing on your site. To do that you need to be able to access the web server logs.

There are lots of great tools available, for a wide range of cost and services offered. Some of the more ones out there are Webtrends, Webalizer, and Urchin.

Urchin was bought by Google as now available to you free. It is a great tool and ridiculously easy to install. Here’s the link:

Google Website Optimizer is a tool that tests your website’s content for accessibility. Using it will help you design more effective sites that do a better job for your users and get better search engine rankings.

8. More is better. The more pages you have the more likely you are to hit all the search terms your users could possibly be using. More pages means more links, more URLs, more title tags, more key word rich content, more spider food!

9. Including a blog on your site that is constantly being updated is a great way to improve your search engine ratings. Blogs provide lots of new content, new pages, and new links.

10. Search Engine No-nos, or How to Get Thrown Out of the Game

There’s no doubt about it — search engines are smart. They have learned how to spot a cheater. Here are some of the more common cheats that can get your site in big trouble with the search engines:

Illegible links and text – links and text have to be visible to the average, healthy human eye. That means the search engines will take a dim view of styles that match the color of the background or specify illegibly small font sizes.

Text or links too small to read – see above.

Same color as background – all text and links must be in a color that contrasts with the background color.

Going crazy with the meta tags – be judicious in the number of key words you use in the meta tags. Keep the descriptions reasonably short.

The following is an article posted to a discussion page for a course I’m taking on Usability from AAU.
Search Engine Optimizers
SEO is an abbreviation for “search engine optimizer.” Many SEOs provide useful services for website owners, from writing copy to giving advice on site architecture and helping to find relevant directories to which a site can be submitted. However, there are a few unethical SEOs who have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to unfairly manipulate search engine results.
While Google does not have relationships with any SEOs and does not offer recommendations, we do have a few tips that may help you distinguish between an SEO that will improve your site and one that will only improve your chances of being dropped from search engine results altogether.
Be wary of SEO firms that send you email out of the blue.
Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:
“Dear google.com,
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories…”
Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for “burn fat at night” diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.
No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.
Beware of SEO’s that claim to guarantee rankings, or that claim a “special relationship” with Google, or that claim to have a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is by using the page at http://www.google.com/addurl.html. You can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.
Be careful if a company is secretive or won’t clearly explain what they intend to do.
Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or “throwaway” domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google’s index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it’s best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to “help” you.
You should never have to link to an SEO.
Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of “free-for-all” links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that do not affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines. At least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.
Some SEOs may try to sell you the ability to type keywords directly into the browser address bar.
Most such proposals require users to install extra software, and very few users do so. Evaluate such proposals with extreme care and be skeptical about the self-reported number of users who have downloaded the required applications.
Choose wisely.
While you consider whether to go with an SEO, you may want to do some research on the industry. Google is one way to do that of course. You might also seek out a few of the cautionary tales that have appeared in the press, including this article on one particularly aggressive SEO:http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2002/07/01/spyware_inc/index.html
While Google does not comment on specific companies, we have encountered firms calling themselves SEOs who follow practices that are clearly beyond the pale of accepted business behavior. Be careful.
Be sure to understand where the money goes.
While Google never sells better ranking in our search results themselves, several other search engines combine pay-per-click or pay-for-inclusion results with their regular web search results. Some SEO’s will promise to rank you highly in search engines, but place you in the advertising section of the engine rather than in search results. A few SEO’s will even change their bid prices in real time to create the illusion that they “control” other search engines and can place themselves in the slot of their choice. This scam does not work with Google because our advertising is clearly labeled and separated from our search results, but be sure to ask any SEO you’re considering which fees go toward permanent inclusion and which apply toward temporary advertising.
Talk to many SEOs, and ask other SEOs if they would recommend the firm you’re considering.
References are a good start, but they don’t tell the whole story. You should ask how long a company has been in business and how many full time staffers it employs. If you feel pressured or uneasy, go with your gut feeling and play it safe: hold off until you find a firm that you can trust. Ask your SEO firm if it reports every spam abuse that it finds to Google using our spam complaint form athttp://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html. Ethical SEO firms report deceptive sites that violate Google’s spam guidelines.
Make sure you’re protected legally.
For your own safety, you should insist on a full and unconditional money-back guarantee. Don’t be afraid to request a refund if you are unsatisfied for any reason, or if your SEO’s actions causes your domain to be removed from a search engine’s index. Make sure you have a contract in writing that includes pricing. The contract should also require the SEO to stay within the guidelines recommended by each search engine for site inclusion.
What are the most common abuses a website owner is likely to encounter?
One common scam is the creation of “shadow” domains that funnel users to a site by using deceptive redirects. These shadow domains often will be owned by the SEO who claims to be working on a client’s behalf. However, if the relationship sours, the SEO may point the domain to a different site, or even to a competitor’s domain. If that happens, the client has paid to develop a competing site owned entirely by the SEO.
Another illicit practice is to place “doorway” pages loaded with keywords on the client’s site somewhere. The SEO promises this will make the page more relevant for more queries. This is inherently false since individual pages are rarely relevant for a wide range of keywords. More insidious however, is that these doorway pages often contain hidden links to the SEO’s other clients as well. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.
What are some other things to look out for?
There are a few warning signs you may be dealing with a rogue SEO. It’s far from a comprehensive list, so if you have any doubts, you should trust your instincts. By all means, feel free to walk away if the SEO:
owns shadow domains
puts links to their other clients on doorway pages
offers to sell keywords in the address bar
doesn’t distinguish between actual search results and ads that appear in search results
guarantees ranking, but only on obscure, long keyword phrases you would
get anyway
operates with multiple aliases or falsified WHOIS info
gets traffic from “fake” search engines, spyware, or scumware

Legibility

The typeface is legible and the font size is sufficient.

Italics are avoided except at large sizes.

Boldface and all caps are only used for short pieces of text (Boldface is preferred over all caps).

EXAMPLE CONTENT STYLE GUIDE

This style guide provides your client organization with standards for developing and presenting text. Such standards minimize the complexity of editing content for consistency. Specific standards will almost certainly vary for each organization. A style guide should rarely allow poor usage (such as using blue text for headers), but may often disallow perfectly good usage in order to maintain a coherent style (for instance, this guide strictly prohibits text in all caps, which might otherwise be acceptable in some limited contexts).

This document establishes some standards for writing in order to achieve a consistent voice and content that is both readable and effective for website users. These guidelines will also be used by the website developers to proofread webpages.

Writing Style:

Use the active voice.

Refer to our company in the first person (when pronouns are used at all), such as, “We put our customers first.” (That is, never refer to our company as “it” or “they” or “the company.”)

Refer to the reader in the second person, as in “Our customers are important to us. Your needs drive all of our efforts.”

Use direct, simple sentences.

Divide the text into small, easy-to-read chunks.

Provide factual and content-rich information. Avoid anything that would be perceived as advertising copy or fluff.

Put the main themes at the top of every page. Put the main themes in the first sentence of each paragraph.

Present lists as bulleted items, not as prose.

Use clear section titles, and liberally include headings where they help users to quickly find information.

Avoid ambiguity. Avoid trying to draw people in with incomplete teasers. Give them the information they need as soon as possible and as succinctly as possible.

Formatting:

Align all text to the left, including headers and paragraphs.

Separate paragraphs with two line breaks. Put one blank line before headers and no blank lines after headers.

Don’t use smart quotes (curly quotes). Use only straight quotes and apostrophes.

Avoid special characters that may not be available in HTML. If you have the opportunity, you can save the developers a lot of time by providing a printed copy of any pages that use unusual characters, with those characters highlighted. Examples of special characters that may require extra work to reproduce include em dash (-), copyright (©), trademark (™), registered trademark (®), cedilla (ç), umlauts (_), micro (µ), yen (¥), pounds (£), degrees (º), and Euro (€).

Use bold to highlight words and phrases. Do not use italics (which can be difficult to read on the screen). Do not use all caps.

Do not rely on variations of font and font size. These are not reliable across platforms on web browsers or with different user preference settings.

Spelling and Trademarks

Make sure all trademarks, service marks, and registered trademarks are labeled according to the standard corporate reference.

“Web site” is two words.

Use American English spellings throughout.

Writing for Search Engines

Make sure you know what information will be important for your user/reader. You’ll want to get feedback on how they would to search/retrieve this data. These will include common terms that may be used to search for your information. This is the stage for ensuring that you have the correct meta data to describe the content you plan to make accessible over the web.

For each page, provide a one-sentence (25 words or less) description of the page that will be used in a hidden description field (this is the description many search engines will provide in their listing of search results).

For each page, provide a short set of keywords that will be used in a hidden keywords field.

With your keywords, include common misspellings and alternate spellings (e.g., “web site” and “website”).

Content Delivery Format

The web site development team can convert between several text formats, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, plain text, RTF, Quark, and PageMaker. However, new content will be easiest to work with if it is created in Word or in plain text. Please do not convert your text to HTML. It is also helpful to provide the development team with a paper version to verify the format of the text and for proofreading.

Graphics content can be delivered in almost any standard graphics format, including EPS, Photoshop, TIFF, GIF, JPEG, Freehand, Illustrator, BMP, and PICT. To maintain the highest quality, avoid using a compressed format, such as GIF or JPEG, and provide the highest-resolution version you have. If electronic versions are not available, we can scan camera-ready print versions.

from bulletproofblueprint.com

It is a fact that the internet is all about content. And internet marketers realize that content is king and good content is what moves their business. Content is a basic tool to set up our sites, create backlinks, build lists, create relationship with our customers and generate traffic. It is an indispensable component for a profitable selling effort that every good internet marketer needs

However composing content is a drawback that a lot of internet marketers have to deal with. Not all good marketers have the writing skill to write good content. And other marketers who are endowed with the savvy to write find it difficult to insert article writing into their busy calendar and would prefer to focus their efforts on the more important tasks of implementing their business and selling strategy. The time-consuming and oftentimes tedious task of content writing, more often than not, takes a huge portion of your workload, taking very important time that you could have used more efficiently and profitably.

You Don’t Have To Do The Work

Rather than laboring on this time-consuming and frequently tedious task of creating content, a better alternative would be to have others do the task for you. There are freelance services available that can do this for you but good content written by freelance writers solely for you can be availed of with a considerable price tag. And because these services are costly going this route will only take a considerable portion off your profit pie.

One option would be to reprint or republish articles from article directories. But this option requires you to use the articles in its original form, with the author’s links and all, causing a leak in your link juices.

Content created your way, right away twice a week.

1. on-site optimization.

• Choose 4-5 key phrases you think people search for. Get into the mind of your customer, what language do you think they would use to search for your product or service? Is what you do commonly mis-spelled- if so use the common mis-spelling as one of your phrases. for my site I use “website” and “web site”

• Do you serve a certain geographic area or can you go anywhere? If so then you need to add the cities or towns to the end of the phrase ie- graphic design rochester ny, web sites rochester ny (do not use a comma between the city and state, to a search engine this means more information)

• add alt text to all of the images on your site that is the same as one of the key phrases you have decided to use. Here’s a sample of what the code looks like: <img src=”filename.jpg” alt=”graphic design rochester ny”/>

• meta tags: this is a list of all the key phrases you are using. The code is located in the head tag of the site. Here’s what the code looks like:

<meta name=”keywords” content=”graphic design rochester ny, websites rochester ny, web sites rochester ny, business cards rochester ny, seo rochester ny” />

• the last thing you need to do is to implant the key phrases in your text on the site. So, if you were to write an article about “best ways to optimize your site” your title should actually say “website seo rochester ny”

2. off-site seo

• begin blogging. Not only does it add a ton of value to the users of your website, but it also creates a source for back links. Back links are when you have a link to your site from another site. I prefer the word press format, currently it’s the industry standard and is well read by the search engines.

• create a place page on the search engines site. Many of them list places of business. Is your listing accurate? Is the listing not appearing? Make sure it’s right, enhance it with photos and videos. If it’s not there at all, make one.

• use social media… this has become a powerful force. Create accounts and use them! It gives other users a chance to rate you, like you and recommend you.

Finally, always be professional while on-line. If you are running a reputable company and want people to find you on-line then you should always put your business face forward while on the internet. Do a search for yourself in a search engine, what comes up? Is it good, bad or otherwise? If I’m searching for a financial planner and I find his name tied to a site or organization that’s controversial or doesn’t comply to my family values or political beliefs I probably am not going to use that person to manage my money.

Everything on-line is tracked and documented! when you post information onto a website that information becomes the property of that company. If you aren’t signed on to a secure site (one that has pages not isn’t listed/crawled in the search engines) then be careful the information you share. For instance, if I have a visitor to my site, it’s documented in my analytics, I know the ip address of the computer they used to access my site, where it’s located on the earth maybe even a businesses name of where the computer is located, what search engine they used, how long they stayed on my site and what pages they looked at.

You may not be a big fan of social media, but it can be a great resource for finding the ultimate business contact for you. Within seconds you can find the person you’ve been dreaming of to get as a client and send them a secure message through a friend request.

When you are on Facebook, or linked in or any other network take advantage of your friend’s friends. They may know someone you been wanting to meet. Use it to your advantage! Your message may read “Hi, I notice we have a mutual friend in (your facebook friends name). I’d love to get together with you. Maybe we can exchange some business together.”

Whatever you do make sure it’s genuine. Eventhough it’s not a face to face meeting at first people can tell through your writing if you are being sincere or if you are just looking to exploit their connectedness.

Alas, if you have no desire to do this on your own there’s plenty of social networking nanny’s out there who will do the work for you at a reasonable rate.
